Games

A collection of games I've been involved with.

The Singing Tower

A solo project from my time at RMIT

Sprawl Runner

A game jam project from my time at Impossible Worlds Game Studio

Freelance Designer

at Wymac Gaming Solutions

September 2016 - November 2016

At Wymac I was brought in to help assist the team with the initial greybox environment modelling. I helped construct two environments getting the level ready in Unity for the designers and artists to test.

These spaces were not final art pieces simply a rough representation of the space allowing the concept artists to get a sense of scale and allowing the designers to start considering enemy spawn points and other elements of gameplay.

For this project I had to teach myself to use Probuilder (an in-engine 3D modelling tool available on the Unity Asset Store) within 2 days. I also had to work closely with Jair Wallace the head producer and lead designer on the project to ensure I was constructing a space suitable for their needs at every step of the project.

Bachelor Of Design (Games)

At RMIT

March 2014 - November 2016

At RMIT I focused on developing my design skills and further building my knowledge of game making. I wanted to develop greater practical skills and learn more professional skills before trying to enter the work force as an environment artist. I worked on a range of different games and projects over this period and tried to increase my understanding of what each member of a game team does to improve communication skills with people outside my specialized field.

I finished this degree by working on my capstone project. "The Singing Tower" (which can be found and played below) was a solo project I undertook over 12 weeks. This was an 3D environment experience I created to test my PBR texturing skills and improve on my environmental storytelling.

The project has some flaws in areas I'm not overly familiar with (such as audio) however the art itself I'm quite proud of. I look forward to experimenting further with the skills I developed over the course of this game's creation.

Bachelor Of Interactive Entertainment

(Major In Animation)

At Qantm College Melbourne

February 2012 - December 2013

Qantm was where I started my formal game education. Over the course of the degree I was introduced to many aspects of game development I'd never considered. It was during my third trimester of 2012 that I first modelled a 3D environment and realized that this was what I wanted to do for my career.

My major project for this degree was "The Snowman Cometh". "The Snowman Cometh" was a 3D beat em up about a 70's cop taking down a James Bond-esque super villain. This was the first major game I ever worked on and I was an animator, 3D character artist and 2D artist working in a team of 9 for this project.

About

Professional Background

I have a Bachelor of Interactive Entertainment (Major in Animation) from Qantm College, as well as a Bachelor of Design (Games) from RMIT.

This combination of degrees gives me a unique perspective as an artist/designer and I'm able to contribute as a bridge between those two roles.

Because of this I was brought in as a freelance environment designer by Wymac Gaming Solutions in late 2016. I'm now looking for work of any kind moving into 2017.

William "Kittens" Place

3D Environment Artist

@Kittens_Place

I'm a 3D Environment artist based in Melbourne, Australia. I've been modelling environment assets and props for 5 years now. I specialize in Maya, xNormal, and the Quixel Suite.

I'm passionate about creating interesting, vibrant worlds. I am also a level/environment designer as I believe an artist should understand and be able to contribute to the design of the games they're involved in. Please feel free to contact me at any time, you'll find my details and my portfolio below.
